• Improved Antivirus and Antispyware Engine:

• Real-time Rootkit Protection:
  The unique “on-access” technology checks all kernel drivers and modules that the operating system loads for signs of rootkit behavior. This allows rootkits to be detected and stopped before they can cause damage.

• Emulation Engine:
  When suspicious executions (both upon request or during scanning) are detected, Avast! can emulate the program code in a sandboxed environment. The emulated code is used for two purposes: firstly, to perform general decompression; secondly, for diagnostic tools. Technically, this is done through dynamic translation — a method much faster than traditional techniques.

• Heuristic Method:
  Starting with version 5.0, avast! features a new proactive diagnostic engine designed to detect malware that cannot be caught by normal virus definitions. The diagnostic tools can include both binary (executable) malware and scripts.

• Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) Detection:
  In version 5.0, avast! now detects potentially unwanted programs such as remote administration tools and commercial keyloggers. Custom rules can be set to handle specific program types.
